Cambridge expert: Solar panels are the new city “status symbol”
A solar expert based in Cambridge believes that solar panels have become the new “status symbol” for up-to-date couples who want to show off their green credentials.
Paul McLeish of Kershaw Solar – part of the city’s well known Kershaw Group – has noticed that solar panels are no longer being bought solely to reduce electricity bills.
“We’ve noticed that some of our clients are picking panels in order to show off their green credentials to their neighbours,” he claimed.
“In this era where the economic situation encourages you to save money as well, solar panels are becoming quite a talking point.
“They are still rare enough to stand out. It’s not unusual for us to return to a street a few weeks after fitting panels to one home, to fit them to a couple more houses.
“It sounds like a case of keeping up with the Joneses – but with huge benefits for their wallets and the environment.”
Solar panels generate their own electricity and can even generate an income for the home.
The government’s feed-in tariff pays homeowners for the electricity they generate but don’t use, for the next 25 years.
This can mean a typical payout of £1,000 a year.
Paul is an expert in renewable energy and has written a free information guide about solar panels and the feed-in tariff for local homeowners.
The free guide can be downloaded from www.solarinstallationguide.co.uk. More than 1,000 Cambs people have now requested the guide.
Paul added: “As the economy continues to bite and people become more and more aware of the damage their home is doing to the environment, I think we are going to see more and more solar panels appearing on properties.
“Now is the right time to look into solar power, and get the government to effectively subsidise your home turning green. This tariff will not be available forever.”
Kershaw Solar specialises in renewable energy and advises on and supplies solar panels to homes and businesses across the UK.
The company is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group, shirt sponsors of Cambridge United.
Parts of the Kershaw Group have a history stretching back 120 years. It employs 183 people and is well known for its involvement in the community.
