Cambridge landlords can alleviate “fuel poverty” with tax break scheme
Private landlords in Cambridge are being urged to help their tenants overcome “fuel poverty” using a little-known government tax break.
Insulation and heating company Kershaw Contracting Services is reminding local landlords about the Landlord’s Energy Saving Allowance scheme.
This week the government has faced criticism over the millions of people said to be in fuel poverty – a situation where 10 per cent of their income or more is spent on energy bills.
Ian Macklin is the Managing Director of Kershaw Contracting Services. He said: “A lot of Cambridge tenants are in this unfortunate situation where their homes are very expensive to heat.
“Often this is because there is little insulation fitted and much of the heat escapes out of the walls and roof.
“But there is actually a government scheme giving landlords tax breaks to insulate their properties, meaning tenants have to pay less to heat them. There is also a huge benefit to the environment as less fuel is burned.”
The Landlord’s Energy Saving Allowance tax break was introduced in 2006 but rarely gets publicity.
It allows landlords who pay income tax to claim a deduction against profits if they install loft insulation or cavity wall insulation in a domestic house they rent out.
The maximum that can be claimed is £1,500 per building.
Ian added: “Properties that are better insulated will cost less to heat and feel warmer. This will help tenants keep heating bills down and landlords to keep tenants for longer.”
