Pressroom :: 4 OUT OF 5 HOMES WILL BENEFIT

4 out of 5 Cambridge homes will benefit from today’s fuel bill plan
Up to 33,695 houses in Cambridge could benefit from the package of energy saving measures announced by Gordon Brown today (Thursday 11th September 2008).
An estimated four out of five homes in the city don’t have enough loft insulation, according to Cambridge insulation and energy experts Kershaw Contracting Services.
And that means they must spend more on energy to keep their homes warm this winter.
Among measures announced by Gordon Brown today are free cavity wall and loft insulation for pensioners and poor households, and half price insulation for everyone else.
Mick Rayson is the managing director of Kershaw Contracting Services and welcomed the move.
He said: “This is an excellent step by the government. Installing extra insulation is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to stop energy being wasted in the home and lower energy bills.
“Good insulation reduces the need for so much heating, so it starts saving energy straight away. The average home will save £110 a year in heating bills.
“That means the insulation will have paid for itself within a few years. But the benefit to the environment will last for years to come.”
Mick added: “So many people were clamouring for a windfall tax on energy companies. But the government has done the right thing and focused on making our homes greener. Cambridge and the rest of the UK will benefit from this for years to come.”
Experts at Kershaw Contracting Services found industry figures that showed on average 79 per cent of homes have no loft insulation at all.
And that means 33,695 houses in Cambridge.
Kershaw Contracting Services specialises in helping home owners save energy with new insulation and energy efficient heating systems.
It is part of the successful Kershaw Group, which has its head office in Cambridge.
The group employs 183 people and is a major sponsor of Cambridge United.
