Rising gas prices push insulation business up 38%
The horrendous rise in UK gas prices has seen a huge increase in business for Cambridge’s biggest insulation-fitting company.
Kershaw Contracting Services has recorded a 38 per cent rise in turnover of grant-aided insulation in the last quarter, compared to the same period in 2007.
That means the work is paid for by the government and benefits Cambridge people who couldn’t otherwise afford it.
The news comes as British Gas warns the average gas bill could rise 60 per cent to £1,000 a year within four years.
Mick Rayson is the managing director of Kershaw Contracting Services.
He said: “Energy prices are rocketing quickly and people are doing whatever they can to reduce their bills. The quickest and most efficient way to do this is to better insulate your house, so you don’t have to burn as much gas to heat it.
“There is plenty of money around for retired people, or those on low incomes, to get help. The government puts pressure on the utility companies to contribute to schemes.”
Mick added: “Everyone benefits, as less gas burned means lower bills and less CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere.”
Kershaw Contracting Services fits loft and cavity wall insulation.
It helps many customers apply for grants, which allow them in many cases to get insulation totally free.
The company is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group, which employs 183 people.
Parts of the group have a history stretching back 120 years.
It’s well known for its involvement in the community, including sponsoring Cambridge United’s away shirts.
