Cambridge experts welcome government’s 2030 green homes plan
A government plan to make every single house in the city green by the year 2030 has been welcomed by local energy experts.
Mick Rayson, the Managing Director of Cambridge domestic insulation and central heating company Kershaw Contracting Services believes the scheme announced last week is a very smart move.
Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband announced cavity wall and loft insulation will be available for all suitable homes, with plans to retrofit 400,000 homes a year by 2015.
By 2030 all UK homes will have had a green makeover.
And that level of commitment has impressed Mick.
He said: “This will save local people money and significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere.
“At the moment the average household energy bill is £1,300 a year, and it’s estimated that in some homes up to £300 of that is wasted energy. Fitting insulation is a cheap and effective way of stopping that straight away.”
The new strategy could help cut household carbon emissions by a third by 2020, part of the government target to reduce overall UK emissions by 80% by 2050.
Currently, homes account for 27% of the UK's carbon emissions through heating and power.
Earlier this year, statistics showed it was the coldest start to a winter since 1976.
And it was revealed that turning up your thermostat by just one degree can put heating bills
up by ten per cent.
Kershaw Contracting Services is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group.
It was recently rewarded for its long-term commitment to excellent health and safety by being accepted into the exclusive SAFEcontractor programme.
Parts of the Kershaw Group have a history stretching back 120 years. It employs 183 people and is well known for its involvement in the community.
