New drive to help thousands of Cambridge people get energy grants
Thousands of people in Cambridge are needlessly sitting in cold homes with energy bills they can’t afford to pay.
Yet many people on reduced incomes or certain benefits are eligible for an energy grant, according to Cottenham company Kershaw Contracting Services.
It is launching a new drive to ensure local people get the energy grants they are entitled to.
“The winter was really cold meaning many people spent more on their heating than they had budgeted for,” said Kershaw Contracting Services’ managing director Ian Macklin.
“For some families, a choice has to be made between food and heating. Yet it is exactly those families that could qualify for a free grant and get a warmer house that costs less to heat.”
There are a number of different schemes which provide up to £3,500 to households on certain benefits.
The money is used to fit high efficiency central heating, to control the supply of heating and hot water.
It also funds loft and cavity wall insulation, which stops so much heat leaving the house through the roof and walls.
Homes with good heating and insulation cost less to heat and stay warmer for longer.
Ian said: “It really frustrates me and my team to see stories in the media about needless deaths or illnesses caused by the cold.
“There are many grants around. Often there is no cost to the homeowner or tenant whatsoever.
“People just need to apply for their grant and can benefit from a warmer home quickly.”

Kershaw Contracting Services is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group, which employs 183 people in total.
It works across a large part of the UK upgrading central heating systems, removing asbestos from buildings, and fitting insulation in domestic homes.
Parts of the Kershaw group have a history stretching back 120 years.
