Cambridge company sends asbestos warning to local builders
A Cambridge company is issuing a warning to builders in the city about the deadly cancer-causing material asbestos, after the release of new figures.
Kershaw Contracting Services, which is Cambridge’s biggest asbestos removal company, believes local trades people are in danger.
Recent shocking Health & Safety Executive figures showed of the 4,000 UK deaths caused by asbestos, 1,000 of those were trades people.
Kershaw’s MD Mick Rayson said: “It is the builders doing work in the city’s buildings who are most at risk.
“Asbestos already in place is safe until it is disturbed. This is most likely to happen during building works.”
Mick added: “Luckily most contractors in Cambridge know this and take adequate precautions. We’re working with contractors to help them safely identify asbestos and have it removed before anyone is put at any risk.”
Asbestos was widely used as an insulating and fire proofing material in buildings constructed from the 1870s to 1980s.
When disturbed during building or demolition work, asbestos fibres can be released. Breathing in fibres can lead to asbestos-related diseases, mostly cancers of the lungs and chest lining.
It’s estimated a million tonnes are still in British buildings.
Kershaw Contracting Services is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group, which employs 183 people.
Parts of the group have a history stretching back 120 years.
It’s well known for its involvement in the community, including sponsoring Cambridge United’s away shirts.
