Expert: Don’t jail Cambridge homeowners for using too much energy
An expert in energy and domestic insulation has argued that it would be grossly unfair to prosecute Cambridge homeowners for failing to fit adequate insulation.
Ian Macklin, the Managing Director of Cambridge company Kershaw Contracting Services was responding to a suggestion by an environmental group.
WWF Scotland suggested that failing to take steps such as installing insulation in order to increase domestic energy efficiency levels should be made a criminal offence.
But Ian believes proper education is a better approach.
He said: “I have worked in insulation for more than two decades. Right now there are more people who are aware of the benefits of fully insulating their home than there have ever been.
“Currently people see insulation as a good thing. They know it is an inexpensive way to reduce their fuel bills and impact on the environment.
“If you threatened to prosecute them if they didn’t fit insulation, the situation would quickly change. Insulation would become a grudge purchase and people would find ways round the law.”
Ian added: “The government has recently announced a series of initiatives aimed at helping homeowners to make their properties more efficient.
“This is the right way forward and I support more education and more financial help so those who want better insulation can get it.”
Kershaw Contracting Services is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group.
Parts of the Kershaw Group have a history stretching back 120 years. It employs 183 people and is well known for its involvement in the community.
