Cambridge expert: Home energy use increase must be tackled
Homeowners in Cambridge must insulate their house to reduce the amount of gas and electricity they are using, after new figures showed home energy usage is increasing.
That’s according to Ian Macklin, the Managing Director of Cambridge company Kershaw Contracting Services.
New figures out this week showed domestic energy use went up in 2008 compared to 2007.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) data revealed domestic consumption of gas went up 4.8 per cent, and electricity up by 2.7 per cent.
“The answer is very simple: better insulation to stop so much energy wastage,” Ian said.
“A house without adequate insulation needs more energy to heat it properly and loses that heat more quickly. That’s crazy, when a home can be properly insulated for just a few hundred pounds.
“It’s an investment which pays for itself and protects the environment at the same time.”
The government agrees with the strategy of insulating homes to make them more green.
It recently announced cavity wall and loft insulation will be available for all suitable homes, with plans to retrofit 400,000 homes a year by 2015.
This week’s DECC figures did contain some good news.
The industrial sector's gas consumption fell by 6.1 per cent, and overall energy production was 4.8 per cent lower in 2008.
Another set of figures from DECC revealed a two per cent drop in carbon dioxide emissions over the same period.
Kershaw Contracting Services is a division of the Cambridge-based Kershaw Group.
