Pressroom :: Insurers should invest in agricultural buildings

Insurers should invest in agricultural buildings to reduce repair bills

Insurance companies should invest in reinforcing agricultural buildings with powerful polyurethane foam to reduce future repair bills.

That’s the message from leading insulation and energy conservation company Kershaw Contracting Services.

It believes insurance companies could significantly reduce the costs of repairing ageing buildings in the next couple of decades, for the sake of a small investment now.

The company is writing to all major insurers suggesting the step and offering advice.

The company specialises in increasing the energy efficiency of commercial and domestic buildings using powerful insulators such as sprayable polyurethane foam.

And the firm’s Mick Rayson said there are hugely beneficial side effects of using it.

Mick, who is also chairman of the British Urethane Foam Contractors Association, said: “Typically polyurethane foam is sprayed or injected to provide highly efficient and tight insulation standards.

“But because it expands to seal all gaps and moulds itself to contours, it has the effect of strengthening buildings.

“For example, where it is sprayed into roof cavities, tiles and roof sheeting becomes literally fixed into place, making it heavily resistant to storm damage.”

“Installing layers of polyurethane foam in agricultural buildings is a sensible investment that insurance companies could use to control future costs.”

Mick added: “There’s an obvious benefit for farmers too, with less chance of damage to building interrupting business, and reduced energy bills.”

Kershaw Contracting Services is part of the successful Kershaw Group, which has its head office in Cambridge is a founding member of The British Urethane Foam Contractors Association (BUFCA) .

The group employs 183 people.
