Council contractor drills into asbestos in school classroom
A council contractor in Wokingham drilled into a wall in an ICT lab at Walter Infant and Nursery School, leaving asbestos exposed for four days, while children were at school.
Wokingham Borough Council commissioned an asbestos survey 18 months ago and holds a register detailing exactly where the material can be found in each school.
It’s not yet known how this was overlooked, but an enquiry has been launched, which could take several months to complete.
The room was sealed and deep-cleaned by an asbestos specialist as soon as the material was discovered and all potentially-contaminated equipment including books and computers has been removed.
It’s thought that the blunder occurred during the installation of a fibre optic cable.
Kershaw Contracting Services has decades of experience in asbestos removal, including in sensitive areas such as schools.
