Recent cases highlight need for better disposal and storage of asbestos
Two separate incidents of asbestos ‘fly-tipping’ and illegal storage of the hazardous waste suggest more needs to be done to educate the construction industry on the importance of correct disposal.
In Sutton, Surrey, asbestos has been dumped on two occasions leading the council to appeal for witnesses to help identify the offending vehicles and drivers.
The council believes the offenders could be professional builders or roofers who should know that dumping asbestos in unapproved locations is extremely dangerous and illegal.
It is also illegal to dispose of asbestos amongst domestic waste although residents of Sutton can arrange to have asbestos waste collected from their homes.
In Ipswich, Suffolk, a builder has been fined for storing asbestos illegally in his yard. He was fined £350 and ordered to pay £250 of this to the Environment Agency.
The builder was also prosecuted for failing to have the correct documentation regarding disposal of asbestos waste, highlighting the importance that all those working with this dangerous material are aware of the rules and regulations.
