Cases of lung cancer caused by asbestos double
Cases of mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, have doubled in the past ten years.
The figures came to light in response to questions posed in the House of Commons to Labour MP Stephen Hepburn.
Hospitals treated almost 8,000 cases of the disease over the past year compared to almost 4,000 in 1998-99.
The effects of asbestos exposure can lie dormant for many years and experts have been warning of an ‘asbestos timebomb’.
Asbestos exposure can cause a multitude of diseases and conditions including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, which is a particularly aggressive form of lung cancer.
Symptoms of asbestosis include chest pain, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest.
Kershaw Contracting Services has decades of experience in asbestos removal.
