Asbestos in Royal palaces pushes up Queen’s maintenance bill
Asbestos which needs to be urgently removed from some Royal palaces has contributed to the Queen’s impending financial crisis.
It’s been reported the Royals are spending several million more each year than they receive, forcing the Queen to dip into Royal savings.
But that money will run out by 2012 unless the government steps in to help.
One of the biggest financial problems faced by the Royal family is a massive property maintenance backlog, including a number of asbestos problems.
The Independent reports the bill has now reached £40m, an increase of £8m, for work which has to be completed in the next 10 years.
Some of the most pressing maintenance includes the £13m renewal of the lead and slate roofs at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
There is also urgent need for funds to pay for the removal of asbestos in some of the palaces.
Kershaw Contracting Services is known for asbestos removal and disposal in sensitive buildings.
