MPs demand action to protect homeowners from asbestos
Nearly 60 MPs have signed a motion demanding the government protects people from asbestos in their homes – that they probably don’t know about.
It’s after a report warned that many householders have no idea asbestos was used in the construction of their homes decades ago.
The story was reported in The Mirror, which is running a long awareness campaign highlighting how asbestos is affecting people every day.
MP Michael Clapham told the newspaper: "It is extremely important people take steps to deal with it safely when it is found."
The report, called “As Safe As Houses”, suggests landlords to manage asbestos in all parts of a property - not just communal areas - and to keep a register of where it is.
It also suggests asbestos surveys for all house sales and plans for builders showing where asbestos is.
This would bring many homes into line with commercial requirements.
Kershaw Contracting Services has decades of experience doing asbestos surveys and is a member of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association.
