Developers ask for demolition permission to avoid “asbestos cloud”
Developers who own a derelict cinema in Doncaster have asked permission to demolish it – as they fear arsonists could release a cloud of asbestos over the town.
Lazarus Properties has applied for permission to knock down the cinema which closed a year ago, and replace it with a new £10 million leisure complex.
The 1930s art deco building has been badly vandalised and suffered two arson attacks since it shut.
Speaking to The Star newspaper, the company’s Lloyd Nicholson said: “We are constantly making the building secure and have security on site nearly all the time but if someone starts a major fire that could spread asbestos round the town and we wouldn't want that.”
Kershaw Contracting Services is relied upon by hundreds of contractors for asbestos removal and disposal.
