Schools campaign discovers asbestos link to other cancers
Asbestos is already known to be the cause of a type of lung cancer – now scientists believe it can cause ovarian cancer and cancer of the larynx.
The Daily Mirror announced the news last week, as part of its campaign to tackle the asbestos “timebomb” in the UK’s schools.
The newspaper reported that a warning about the link to the cancers was made by 27 World Health Organisation scientists.
There is "limited evidence" that the fibre can raise the risk of cancers of the bowel, the stomach and the throat.
It is already known that asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma – a cancer of the lining of the lung.
The Daily Mirror has joined doctors and charities to demand a new £10 million centre is set up to research asbestos-related diseases.
