Workers exposed to asbestos after inaccurate survey
Two workers were accidentally exposed to asbestos after an inaccurate survey said there was none of the killer substance present.
A survey carried out at the site in Oxfordshire reported no asbestos.
Two members of staff began work on the site. Part of their job involved removing panels of fibrous board.
But the site manager became suspicious about the pieces of panel that had been removed and they were analysed. The results showed they did contain asbestos.
A later survey discovered materials containing asbestos in several areas throughout the building, including the areas where the two men had been working.
A Hertfordshire company pleaded guilty to breaching section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. It was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,091.70.
