Council fined after using unlicensed asbestos firm at school
Edinburgh City Council and a demolition firm have been fined a total of £29,000 after staff used unsafe methods to remove asbestos at a school.
Workers without protective clothing or adequate training removed asbestos from the school while other people were nearby.
Bits of asbestos were left on the grass outside the school.
Dalkeith Demolition Ltd admitted breaking health and safety regulations.
The firm was selected by the council from an old database which showed it had a licence to remove asbestos until 2003.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) said the way the asbestos was removed meant the workmen were likely to have been exposed.
Dangerous fibres may also have spread across the floor of the school.
Kershaw Contracting Services can undertake correct and legal asbestos removal and disposal.
