Tighter insulation regulations for landlords
Landlords could be banned from letting properties with insufficiently advanced insulation and be forced to meet a new ‘minimum insulation requirements’ under new government plans.
Councils will also be able to require energy companies to work with them to insulate social housing.
The new legislation is part of plans to issue estate agents with instructions to consider energy efficiency when they are assessing the value of a house.
Ministers believe that homeowners are more likely to invest in increasing the energy efficiency of their homes by improving insulation and fitting solar panels or a wind turbine if their investment has a positive influence on the value of their home as well reducing their energy bills.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change has asked the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors for recommendations about how best to incorporate energy efficiency into the existing criteria that are assessed when deciding the value of a home.
