£2 per week heating bill for social housing residents in new ‘super eco’ houses
Work has begun on four ‘eco homes’ that planners hope will cost just £2 per week in heating and hot water.
The three bedroom, semi-detached houses are being built for Scotland’s largest social housing landlord, the Glasgow Housing Association (GHA).
At this time, the houses are just prototypes, but the GHA hopes that once they have been properly tested that they will be able to build more for tenants to move into.
Most of the energy gains are made using advanced insulation used alongside design features to capture the energy of the sun.
Speaking to the BBC, GHA's director of regeneration Jim Sneddon said: "We already provide some of the lowest cost social housing in Glasgow and now we want to provide the best and greenest housing which benefits our tenants and the environment.
"Fuel poverty is an issue which affects many of our tenants and is one which could escalate, unless alternatives are found."
Kershaw Contracting Services provides cavity wall and loft insulation to authorities, builders, contractors and home owners.
