Scottish and Southern Energy starts work on Zero Carbon housing project
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has announced plans to build and monitor its own development of ‘Zero Carbon’ homes.
The purpose of the project is to allow SSE to test the ‘real world’, everyday performance of the latest eco home technology such as enhanced insulation, photovoltaic roof panels and a renewable district heating system.
It will also provide the energy company with the opportunity to study the implications of zero carbon living on the householders and supply important data for SSE to share with its construction partners, technology manufacturers and industry bodies.
The development will consist of 10 homes in Chalvey, Slough, incorporating a mixture of two and three-bedroom homes and one-bedroom flats. It is to be constructed on the brown field site of an old SSE office building.
Upon completion this summer the houses will be rented to SSE employees and local key workers, who will contribute to studies being carried out by Reading University, the National House-Building Council and the Building Research Establishment via monthly questionnaires.
Ian Marchant, chief executive of Scottish and Southern Energy, said: "This project will help us understand the challenges facing builders, architects and suppliers as they prepare for these new building regulations.
"We will also get a unique insight into the needs and concerns of residents as they adapt to low carbon living.”
