Proper insulation would reduce carbon emissions by 3.8 million tonnes
An ageing housing stock means that buildings account for 44% of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions, according to the UK Green Building Council.
Effective insulation, energy-saving light bulbs, wind turbines and rain-water storage would have a huge impact on current emissions.
But we need to do more. Channel 4 News contacted UK scientists to find out what can be done.
By using thermal imaging, Professor Joseph Giacomin from Brunel University wants people to engage emotionally in energy efficiency by allowing them to see how much energy is being wasted, for example by poor insulation.
His ideas involve incorporating thermal imaging into car dashboards and home thermostats.
As well as new technologies, The Energy Saving Trust urges people to invest in efficient products and make sure homes are properly insulated.
Kershaw Contracting Services provides cavity wall and loft insulation to authorities, builders, contractors and home owners.
