50% rise in winter deaths caused by high fuel bills
Figures announced recently by the Office of National Statistics show a 50% increase in the number of deaths in the three coldest months of the year.
An additional 10,000 people died due to cold-related diseases compared to last year.
A recent poll by Age Concern suggests that 4 in 10 elderly people will not be able to afford to use gas and electricity when they want to this winter.
The elderly are amongst the most vulnerable to diseases like hypothermia, emphysema and bronchitis, which are exacerbated by the cold.
Insulation is critical in helping lower fuel bills and therefore enabling people to heat their homes and stay warm.
National Energy Action is warning that “a lethal combination of low incomes, high bills and poor insulation would continue to pose a serious threat to the health of millions of people”.
Kershaw Contracting Services provides cavity wall and loft insulation to authorities, builders, contractors and home owners.
