Case Studies :: Asbestos Services :: Trinity College, Cambridge

Completed in August 2007, Kershaw’s were contracted by Trinity College, Cambridge to undertake the decontamination of the void between the under croft and main area of the famous Wren Library at Trinity College.

Due to the building being a National Monument and the books within being priceless, the contract was awarded on the ability to undertake work without compromise to health and safety with no margin for error. The ceiling was to be removed to expose the Asbestos Insulating boards which shrouded the heating ducts within the floor void.
The 700m2 library floor was sealed prior to works commencing and a full enclosure created under the building. All walls, floors and columns required protecting with timber prior to sheeting due to the building status.

The work was carried out in 4 phases to ensure the work was undertaken in a controlled manor. Each area was placed under negative pressure and a certificate of re-occupation being issued on the completion of each phase.
The removal presented a special challenge to our workforce as the work had to be undertaken without any damage to the building structure which included the timber supporting the ceiling.

The works were completed within the contract period and most importantly without damaging any part of the structure of the building. The following picture shows the ceiling re-instated.
